Ministering God's Love in Lincoln's Urban Neighborhoods

It’s Tuesday afternoon.

The phone rings at the City Impact office.

A mother asks, “Is there church tonight?” Tuesday evening—not a typical time for church, but, for many City Impact youth, Bible Club is their church. It is here that they are received openly with loving arms.

Each Tuesday, over 120 preschool through high school students are taught and challenged from God’s Word, with lessons relevant to the situations they face. They are mentored by over 40 adult volunteers who are making an impact in the lives of these children. Snack is always a nourishing hit. Rec/Gym time allows the kids and leaders to bond through activites that display what has been taught in club. Praise and worship time reminds them why they are here. Life skills are taught and exemplified by the volunteer mentors. Bridges are built to reach the family. A community women’s Bible study keeps increasing in numbers and a newly formed couples Bible study is helping families grow in their relationship with Christ.

So, what does a typical club night look like? Please read for more details and information about Bible Club.

Spiritual Values - Curriculum – City Impact utilizes Biblically-based curriculum which has been developed to minister and reach at-risk youth. Youth are divided by age and gender into different Bible Clubs. This allows the mentor-to-youth ratio to remain low, thus providing more small group activities and one-on-one attention.

Nourishment - Snack – Each week our snack team serves up a nutritious snack. Often the youth receive little or no supper before heading off to Bible Club, so we know how much the snack means to them!

Life Skills - Bank and Store – One way City Impact imparts life skills to youth is through the KidHope Bank and Store. Youth earn voucher money and take it to the bank where they can choose to deposit or spend some or all of their “KidHope bucks”. Volunteer mentors help the youth make wise choices as to what to do with their money—do they want to put it in savings and earn interest, save it for something special at the store or save it for camp or “Gifts of Love”.

The store is stocked with everything from school supplies and basic necessities (toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, socks, etc.) to clothes and toys. The kids purchase birthday presents for friends and family members as well as items for themselves. New items for the store are accepted year-round, as it takes about $5000 per year to keep the store stocked. If you or your business would like to sponsor the KidHope Store, please e-mail Brad.

Adult Bible Study – Occuring while the youth are in Bible Club, the Adult Bible Study provides an opportunity for parents to get support and direction as they lead their families.

Where's the action at? - City Impact's Bible Club meets on Tuesday evenings in a local, neighborhood church, from which we gratefully lease space. Interested in coming and helping? Please call the City Impact office at 402-477-8080.
