Getting Results!

City Impact is witnessing outstanding results from its one-on-one tutoring program, the Impact Reading Center (IRC).  In three of Lincoln’s low-income elementary schools (Elliott, Clinton and Hartley), over 200 volunteers have been part of this empowerment program serving nearly 250 children during the 2009-2010 school year.

  • Why focus on reading?  Two-thirds of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of fourth grade will end up in jail or on welfare.  The fourth grade is the watershed year.

  • Why in the low-income neighborhood schools?  Many children are faced with challenges at home such as parents with language barriers, multiple jobs or evening job hours, etc.

  • Why volunteer or support City Impact’s IRC?  158 students were tutored in the daytime programs with over 80% of these students on pace to finish the year reading at grade level.  89 students have been tutored after school with an average reading score increase of nearly one full grade level each semester they participate in the program.   THIS IS A PRIMARY FOUNDATION FOR A CHILD’S FUTURE SUCCESS.
